Preparation for capsule endoscopy (Pillcam)

Please follow these instructions if you are 60 years or younger and you do not suffer from any kidney problems, cirrhosis of the liver or heart failure. If you are older than 60 years of age or you have any of the conditions mentioned, please call you doctor one week before the procedure to discuss an alternative bowel cleansing plan.



MEDICATIONS:

  • If you are Diabetic you will need to take advice regarding your medication during your colonoscopy preparation period. You should discuss this with your local doctor one week prior to your colonoscopy

  • If you are taking Iron tablets stop these five days before your procedure


BOWEL CLEANSING REQUIRED:

The small bowel must be completely clean for the examination to be successful. Inadequate cleaning of the bowel may result in the procedure having to be repeated. Please follow the instructions carefully. If you have any queries please contact our receptionist.


Bowel cleansing involves two steps:

  • preparation before the bowel cleansing
  • bowel cleansing on the day before the procedure


STEP 1:

  • Purchase one sachet 15.5g PICOPREP from the pharmacy

  • 5 days before the procedure stop any iron supplements

  • 3 days before your procedure avoid any foods high in fibre such as most fruit and vegetables.


STEP 2:

  • On the day before the procedure, have a light breakfast. After breakfast drink only APPROVED FLUIDS until after your examination (NO SOLID FOOD allowed until after the procedure). APPROVED FLUIDS may include water, black tea or coffee, strained fruit juices, jelly, cordial, clear soups such as broth or bonox, carbonated soft drinks and clean ice blocks.

  • Drinks with red and purple colouring are NOT permitted. Solid foods, milk or dairy products are NOT permitted.

  • At 7pm, mix the sachet of PICOPREP with 1 glass of water and drink over a period of 30-40 minutes. Immediately follow with at least 3 glasses of water or clear fluid. Continue to drink plenty of water or other APPROVED FLUIDS until midnight.


  • DO NOT DRINK ANY FLUIDS FOR 2 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT TIME.


PRACTICAL MATTERS FOR THE DAY OF THE PROCEDURE:

  • Please wear loose comfortable clothes e.g. tracksuit.

  • Please avoid wearing any jewellery.
